I used to focus so much on my child's behaviour, until I realised I needed to look within myself first
A shift that happened in my motherhood journey was when I stopped only focusing on my son’s behaviour and started looking deeper
I began learning about the nervous system, attachment, emotional regulation and generational patterns and it changed the way I parented
Instead of reacting with anger, control or frustration I started responding with more awareness, curiosity, connection and regulation. We are human though so we can’t always respond from regulated place. 😅
I learnt behaviour is often communication
That underneath the big emotions is usually something a child doesn’t yet have which are the words or capacity to explain what going on underneath
Having that awareness changed quite a bit for me, It helped me stop seeing every hard moment as something to “fix” and instead respond with more compassion
At the same time though, understanding trauma and emotional development never meant accepting harmful behaviour or having no boundaries
Compassion and accountability can exist together
You can do the inner work
You can love deeply
And just like adults kids are also their own person with their own path, experiences and choices.
Sometimes they make choices that are harmful to themselves or others
Sometimes their struggles become bigger than what love, awareness or parenting alone can fix
That doesn’t mean you failed as a parent!! ⬅️
Has learning about things like the nervous system, attachment or emotional regulation changed the way you parent? 🌞
